Award Winning Youth Leadership Program Created and Led by Turner Employees
September 27, 2016
Turner’s small but mighty corporate responsibility team in Atlanta was just awarded an IMPACT Award by the Corporate Volunteer Council, specifically for our long-standing partnership with the Atlanta non-profit 21st Century Leaders. Over the past 11 years, 21st Century Leaders has been a partner in developing ongoing learning experiences for the more than 10,000 high achieving teenagers that have come through their doors to learn, grow and lead.
Last year, Turner and 21st Century Leaders launched the Turner Voices Youth Media Institute, a summer camp of sorts for 75 Georgia high school juniors and seniors who pass through an intensive interview process to attend. The educational experience features a media-focused curriculum taught by employees from several of Turner’s brands and businesses. The program actually evolved from a previous program, Leadership Unplugged: A CNN Experience, in which students were immersed inside CNN, their on-air talent and employees.
Betsy Holland, who leads the corporate responsibility team at Turner, has been a part of this leadership program since its inception. “We’re always thinking of new ways to take advantage of resources that are special to Turner to create truly meaningful and impactful development opportunities for our community. The 21st Century kids are up for challenges, so we wanted to provide them with an experience beyond an internship or workshop,” said Holland.
The students spend a week living on the Georgia Tech campus and attending classes, workshops, panels and tours at the Turner Techwood campus. This year’s focus was the “Future of Media,” and on each day the students were given an inside look at a different part of Turner’s business. The experience culminated into a final challenge, where students competed in small teams to create a solution for a real-world business challenge facing Turner and its brands. Turner executives and employees – over 120 - from around the company came together to make this a memorable and beneficial experience for the students.
“Turner Voices Youth Media Institute is an amazing opportunity for these students to learn about the media industry while developing their personal leadership style,” said Bob Watson, executive director of 21st Century Leaders. “Turner’s commitment to our future leaders, specifically high school students, is evident in this program and their support to our students year-round.”
