These teens, from the far reaches of the world, are very different in background and upbringing but share one overwhelming passion: a heartfelt desire to save the Earth.
With rings given to them by Gaia, they each control one special element of nature that is an extension of their personalities and talents. The extent of these powers is limited and cannot approach the strength of Captain Planet. Once Captain Planet has been summoned forth, the rings are rendered powerless until he completes his tasks and returns to the Earth. Various forms of pollution also sap the powers of the rings.

Although the Planeteers are generally knowledgeable about environmental issues, they do not always understand the dangers posed by environmentally hazardous situations, and they may need an explanation from Gaia or Captain Planet.
Their vehicles - Wind Kayaks (small, swift boats), the Geo Cruiser (a large flying vehicle), Solar Cycles (small, motorcycle-like land vehicles), the Eco-Sub (a small underwater vehicle), and the Eco-Copster (a small, highly maneuverable flying vehicle) - are nonpolluting and operate off alternative energy sources.
