Captain Planet Foundation
When the US EPA approached Turner Broadcasting System's Environmental Policy Division about helping educate the public about environmental issues, it was time for the Planeteers to get involved. As officers of the Captain Planet Foundation, Captain Planet series Executive Producer, Nick Boxer, and trusty Planeteer Associate Producer, Dan Gottlieb offered to lend their services to produce a series of fun and informative environmental public service announcements.
"A PSA shouldn't have to be preachy... A poignant image is more powerful. After more than twenty years, we still remember the public service announcement from the 1970's depicting a Native American man canoeing down a polluted river with a tear in his eye," explained Boxer to the EPA. The Planeteers at the EPA agreed, and accepted the Captain Planet Foundation's offer to produce a series of four PSA's as part of a cooperative environmental education campaign.
"With the Olympics coming to Atlanta, we wanted our PSA's to be visually 'tongue in cheek' messages which play off of sports motifs to get viewers thinking about environmental issues like water conservation and clean air," said Boxer. TBS' Public Affairs Department liked the idea, and agreed to get the offbeat :30 second snippets on the air in time for the '96 Atlanta Games. Still, the PSA's should have a long shelf life. "We worked hard with the EPA to make sure the PSAs' messages are evergreen," added Gottlieb, "and we anticipate them educating new Planeteers for years to come."
