CNN ‘ROAD TO ASEAN’: JAPANESE BRANDS EXPAND IN THE PHILIPPINES

This month, CNN’s special series ‘Road to ASEAN’ returns with a journey to one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia, the Philippines. Despite the positive commercial developments, the country has one of the lowest numbers of convenience stories per capita in the region – with more than 30,000 people per convenience store versus Thailand’s 5,000 per store. Seeing a huge business opportunity, Japanese convenience store chains such as FamilyMart and newcomer brands such as Lawson are aggressively expanding across the Philippines.
With Lawson aiming to spend a quarter billion US dollars across ASEAN and to open 500 stores in the Philippines by 2020, CNN takes a look at the company’s expansion plans in the archipelago.
