5K’er makes Fit Nation race a family affair

Denise Ward is always looking for her next challenge. We can probably chalk that up to her legal savvy. So, when she first heard about Turner’s Fit Nation program, she knew it was a step in the right direction to meet her – and her family’s – health and fitness goals.
“Some days, it’s just a matter of taking that first step toward something greater,” she says. “Fit Nation can be that first step to a healthier you.”
Fit Nation is a program for Time Warner and Turner employees of all fitness abilities looking to achieve personal fitness goals through free or discounted training, events, and even nutritional guidance.
Two decades ago, Ward moved to Atlanta from California, and has been a legal assistant with Turner for the past 18 years. She says she’s always struggled with her weight but has tried to stay active through different company initiatives – like the Turner Athletic Club and the FitTrip program – hoping to find an exercise regimen that would “stick,” as she says.
Five years ago, she took a few more fitness baby steps and joined a 5K. It turned out to be an experience she’ll never forget – but for all the wrong reasons.
“I think I came in almost last – definitely the back of the pack – which was way worse than I expected,” says Ward.
Thankfully, she didn’t let it dampen her spirits and eventually set her sights on a new challenge: the Turner 5K.
Since Turner allows family and friends to participate in this annual event, Ward was able to bring her seven-year-old daughter along for the journey. She even credits her with keeping her motivated.
“My daughter is like my little cheerleader. She encourages me to move more,” jokes Ward. “She really likes it when we walk together in the evenings after I get home from work.”
The mother-daughter duo was back at it again for this year’s Turner 5K and Trot in Atlanta on Saturday, April 21, aiming to make the event a family tradition for years to come.
Ward definitely encourages other employees to join Fit Nation, since it’s helped her become more aware of her physical activity and eating habits.
“It’s a great opportunity to test yourself and work toward any fitness goal(s) you may have – no matter if you’re a beginner athlete or a veteran,” she says.
Whether you want to lose weight or gain muscle, Fit Nation truly offers something for everyone – from marathons to walks.
