Ellana Lee is Senior Vice President of CNN International, based in the Asia Pacific headquarters of Hong Kong.
She is the most senior executive outside of the U.S. and the Managing Editor for CNN International Asia Pacific. As head of the Asia Pacific network and its editorial output, Lee manages CNN's award-winning on-air news programming produced throughout the region, including the correspondents and newsgathering teams across 8 operations from Kabul to Seoul.
She has traveled to North Korea several times and in mid-2017 spearheaded an exclusive report called ‘Secret State: Inside North Korea’. The 60-minute documentary followed CNN cameras inside the secretive nation to places few outsiders have ever seen.
Lee is also head of CNN Vision, a creative team that produces almost 1000 hours of premium original programming for CNN International every year, delivering long-form series, documentaries and specials for TV, digital and social platforms. Under CNN Vision Lee manages an additional 60 staff across eight production hubs in Hong Kong, London, Abu Dhabi, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Johannesburg and Miami. Through CNN Vision Lee works closely with colleagues at CNN International Commercial and Turner International to develop CNN's business operations worldwide.
While under her management, CNN has received a variety of prestigious awards in the Asia Pacific region and beyond including: 2014 'Cable & Satellite Network of the Year' -- the Asian Television Awards; 2014 and 2013 'Cable & Satellite Channel of the Year' -- the Asian Television Awards; 2013 and 2012 'News Channel of the Year' - the Royal Television Society; 2011 'Cable & Satellite Channel of the Year' and 'Cable & Satellite Network of the Year' -- the Asian Television Awards.
Personal accolades include: 2011 Peabody Award for CNN's global coverage of the Arab Spring; 2008 Peabody Award for the network's global coverage of the U.S presidential primary campaigns and debates; 2005 DuPont award for CNN's coverage of the South Asian tsunami.
In recognition of her leadership position, Lee was named a 'Young Global Leader' by the World Economic Forum, is an Asia 21 fellow as awarded by the Asia Society, and a graduate of Harvard's 'Global Leadership and Public Policy for the 21st Century' Executive Program. She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Lee has had a longstanding and accomplished career at CNN, having initially worked in New York as a producer to help launch the program 'In The Money'. She subsequently worked as a business producer and a senior planning producer, coordinating major events out of the Asia Pacific for the network.
Lee holds a Master's degree in Broadcast Journalism from New York University and an undergraduate degree in History and International Relations from Georgetown University.
