Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Popular Summer Under the Stars Programming Event Returns in August

Annual Programming Event Features A 24-Hour Salute Each Day Of The Month Including Tributes To First-Timers Ann-Margret And Alan Arkin As Well As Returning Legends Fred Astaire And Katharine Hepburn

Turner Classic Movies' (TCM) ultimate movie star showcase, Summer Under the Stars, returns August 1 for its 13th year as TCM pays tribute to 31 different stars in 31 days. This year’s Summer Under the Stars will feature a premiere interview, filmed at the 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival, with iconic actress Ann-Margret and TCM host Ben Mankiewicz on Aug. 13, as well as a salute to Ingrid Bergman for her 100th birthday including a showing of Casablanca (1942).

This year, 15 stars will receive their first Summer Under the Stars salutes, including Oscar® winners:

  • Alan Arkin (Aug. 21), Arkin entered films in 1966, gaining fame for his performance in The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter (1968). He won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award® for Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
  • George C. Scott (Aug. 29), Scott won, but refused to accept, the Best Actor Academy Award for Patton (1970)
  • Patricia Neal (Aug. 16), during the 1950s and 60s, Neal would become a prominent leading lady, winning the Best Actress Academy Award for her role in Hud (1963)
  • Teresa Wright (Aug. 4), Wright is the only performer to receive Oscar nominations for her first three films: The Little Foxes (1941), The Pride Of The Yankees (1942) and Mrs. Miniver (1942) for which she won Best Supporting Actress

This’s year’s returning stars include legends:

  •  Fred Astaire (Aug. 5), Astaire began his career in vaudeville before moving to Hollywood, where he became one of the screen’s greatest song-and-dance men
  • Katharine Hepburn (Aug. 7), Hepburn made her film debut in 1932’s Bill of Divorcement and would go on to become one of the screen’s greatest stars
  • John Wayne (Aug. 19), Wayne began his film career in the 1920s as a prop boy and extra, eventually becoming one of the screen’s greatest Western stars
  • Joan Crawford (Aug. 10), Crawford would make a name for herself playing working-class heroines and won a Best Actress Academy Award® for Mildred Pierce (1945)
  • Gary Cooper (Aug. 30), Cooper began his career as an extra and stunt rider in the early 1920s before becoming an American icon
  • Michael Caine (Aug. 6), Caine began his career on the London stage before entering films gaining stardom in the 1960s with films such as Alfie (1966)
  • Ingrid Bergman (Aug. 28), Bergman began as extra in Swedish films in 1932 and won three Oscars over the course of her career
